They conduct software development which involves an in-depth evaluation of variable factors impacting medium to large projects of broad scope and complexities. And they design, develop, and optimize components/tools for major high-performance computing (HPC) / data science projects.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work with a variety of data sources, including administrative and longitudinal survey data, and will be able to clean, manage, link, and analyze these sources. They will be passionate about using data to find innovative solutions to homelessness.

Job Summary
The Data Scientist / Statistician will work with UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) under the direction of the BHHI faculty director, affiliated faculty members, and the lead statistician.
The Data Scientist / Statistician applies advanced computational, computer science, data science, and statistical principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, to original research projects that focus on homelessness and its effects on health. They conduct software development which involves an in-depth evaluation of variable factors impacting medium to large projects of broad scope and complexities. And they design, develop, and optimize components/tools for major high-performance computing (HPC) / data science projects. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with a variety of data sources, including administrative and longitudinal survey data, and will be able to clean, manage, link, and analyze these sources. They will be passionate about using data to find innovative solutions to homelessness.
The Data Scientist / Statistician will serve as a technical resource for teams consisting of clinical researchers, project managers, data analysts, and statisticians. To this end, they will design, develop, and optimize components/tools for major HPC / data science projects. Resolve complex research and technology development and integration issues. Give technical presentations to associated research and technology groups and management. Evaluate new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex HPC, and data science projects. They may supervise other research and technical staff.
**While we prefer a candidate who is local because analysts sometimes are needed to support field projects in the Bay Area, we will consider candidates who would work entirely remotely.
Additionally, the Data Scientist / Statistician will:
- – Report to the lead statistician of the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) and work closely with other analysts. The incumbent will work collaboratively with other investigators, trainees, staff, and partner organizations.
- – In consultation with the lead statistician and principal investigators, develop multivariable data analysis plans using appropriate statistical methods. The Data Scientist/Statistician should be able to carry out the analysis plan independently.
- – Provide statistical input into the development of data collection tools, including questionnaires.
- – Provide documentation, including drafting statistical sections of grant proposals, manuscripts, and reports.
- – Contribute to study design, ensure the data necessary to evaluate study hypotheses are collected, and the resulting datasets are of sufficient quality to provide reliable results.
- – Collaborate with investigators on research papers.
- – Advanced knowledge of HPC / data science / CI.
- – Highly advanced skills, and demonstrated experience associated with one or more of the following: HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, implementation, and deployment of HPC or data science or CI applications and tools of large-scale scope.
- – Demonstrated ability to regularly, and effectively communicate with unit-level management.
- – Demonstrated ability to initiate research proposals and acquire funding.
- – Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences.
- – In-depth skills and experience in independently resolving complex computing/data / CI problems using introductory and/or intermediate principles.
- – Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
- – Advanced experience working in a complex computing/data / CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools/software, and diverse domain science application base.
- – In-depth ability to successfully work and/or lead multiple concurrent projects. Demonstrated research and technology project leadership and management skills.
- – In-depth experience assessing a broad spectrum of technical and research needs and demands and establishing priorities, delegating and/or leading the development of solutions to meet such needs.
- – Demonstrated advanced experience in one or more of the following: optimizing, benchmarking, HPC performance and power modeling, analyzing hardware, software, and applications for HPC / data / CI.
- – Thorough skills in programming, statistical analysis and data management in STATA, SAS, Python or R.
Department Description:
The UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP) at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) is part of the Department of Medicine (DOM). The CVP carries out innovative research to prevent and treat chronic disease in populations for whom social conditions often conspire to both promote various chronic diseases and make their management more challenging.
Founded in 2006, the CVP is located on the campus of SFGH. Beyond the local communities it serves, CVP is nationally and internationally known for its research in health communication and health policy to reduce health disparities, with special expertise in the social determinants of health, including literacy, homelessness, food policy, poverty, and minority status, with a focus on the clinical conditions of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative is a new program within CVP, which launched in July 2019. The initiative’s goals are to develop and disseminate evidence-based strategies to prevent and end homelessness by conducting high quality research and disseminating findings to policymakers and the general public.
